| Marrickville, with its about140 nationalities living in the area, is often referred to as "the birthplace of multiculturalism is Australia". Main nationalities represented are Vietnam, Greece, China, Portugal and Lebanon. One of the industrial suburbs once, it has seen a reduction of its local manufacturing industry in the recent years and is increasingly becoming more popular as one of the inner Sydney suburbs. |

I was born in Marrickville in 1933 and lived in the same house until I a Marrickville girl in 1956.
The school referred to by Alex in his remark was not a primary school but a secondary school known as Marrickville Junior Technical School - and yes it once was the Town Hall. I attended for three years from 1945-1947.
I was baptized, confirmed and married in St Clements Anglican church.

There is now a good secondhand bookshop -- Urchins at 238 Marrickville Road, that`s worth checking out. |

I would like to suggest that you correct the heading regarding the police station as it is no longer use for that purpose as they have moved to new premises
Just a small point but if someone is looking for help from the police it could delay them from getting help |

We love this town.I`d call this town "Magicville". everyone is here! A great place to raise children. The council run "Magic Yellow Bus" is still going hard after 30 years! People here really enjoy and embrace the different cultures.
We have great restaurants, cafes, butchers and bakeries also a great annual festival
I reckon we have the best pork roll shop in Sydney called "Rayan" near the station. We have a great Lebanese grocery shop"Crazy Coffee and Nuts" and fantastic Vietnamese grocery shops for the freshest herbs! The only thing we dont have are book shops... but you can go to the library for magazines, and books in all different languages. They have home work coaching free internet access and story time for kids!!
Marrickville truly rocks!! |

What a change from the Marrickville I knew as a kid in the late 40s!!! We lived in an old house by a factory my father co-owned - Bion Products. Among other things it produced a Vegemite imitation, naturally called Biomite. Next door was a primary school, that I understand had been the City Hall. An incredibly strict principal - Archer. My first "love" lived there - a Massia (spelling????). Since then I have travelled extensively, lived in various countries, now in Boca Raton, FL. I`d love to hear from anyone about that time. I have at last convinced my wife, a Yank, to visit Sydney for a month which is planned for August/Sept 2007. |
