| Wandering down Oxford street from Hyde Park eastbound towards Paddington, you’ll find this precinct very different from the rest of Sydney and probably the rest of the world. It is a recognized heart of Sydney gay and lesbian community and as such it proudly demonstrates it. Fetish shops, queer night clubs, cafes and pubs are mainly populated with the locals. From Oxford St. turn right to Darlinghurst st. or Victoria st. to walk through to Kings Cross. |

I am planning to move to Darlinghurst close to the Darlo Bar. I am straight. My question is: Is that part of darlinghurst as full on gay as oxford street. Any insights would be most appreciated.

I have lived in Darlinghurst for the past 5 years, only moving from next door (Paddington where I was for 5 years also). I LOVE IT! If I feel like going for a little wander to buy a new outfit...BAM! Funkiest designer stores on my doorstep! If I want a great coffee...BAM! Chic renowned cafe`s at my doorstep! If I want a high-end restaurant meal...BAM BAM BAM! If I want to meet a spunky guy...EASY! Or a beautiful woman...They`re EVERYWHERE!!! Darlinghurst is a mix of glamour, funk & lots of soul!!!!

Darlinghurst is a great place to live. I spent most of my Australian trip based in Darlinghurst. Greet food, nightlife, cafes, etc. It reminds me very much of Toronto, Canada`s gay community, in summer of course. It is very inviting to both the straight and homosexual communities. Plan to return to Sydney, and will rent there most definately.

Darlinghurst is an happening never sleeping suburb of one of the best looking cities in australia. pubs, clubs, shopping, food from everywhere. and a very friendly gay and lesbian community. makes for an intersesting time if you are ever in darlinghurst.
