| Rookwood cemetery (Necropolis) may be the greatest graveyard you’ve ever seen and is a megapolis on its own right. It is claimed to be the largest cemetery in the Southern Hemisphere and a resting place for nearly one million people. It occupies vast space in the geographical centre of Sydney not so far from the Sydney Olympic Park and contains interesting natural and artificial forms not seen anywhere else. Forget about the graveyard and enjoy diversity of presented architectural forms and styles of chapels, vaults and memorials. Or amaze yourself with size and sumptuousness of vaults, some well larger than other people’s houses. It’s best enjoyed by bicycle or walking, although you can drive in too. |

There are fascinating stories whereever you look, beautiful architecture, especially in the old sections, and splendid gardens with rarities that are linked to the earliest plantings from the Botanic Gardens. The giant Celtic Cross made from Carrera marble is a special wonder. Anyone interested in Sydney`s history, religious diversity, sculpture and architecture or symbolic garden design should take the time to explore this overlooked treasure of a place, and check out the museum in the Crematorium to see photos of the train stations that once stood!
