| Elizabeth Bay House is one of the few open for public access Sydney estates of historical and cultural significance. Built between 1835 and 1839 for then Colonial Secretary of NSW and prominent naturalist Alexander Macley and his family. Having since survived many residents and transformations, it now is maintained by the Historic Houses Trust of NSW and became a house museum, furnished to reconstruct the Macley period of 1839-1845. The House is situated on Sydney’s picturesque foreshore near Kings Cross, and, in addition to being a museum on itself, occasionally holds cultural events and exhibitions. |

I recently visited the Elizabeth Bay House during my first visit to Australia in May, 2007. It was a wonderful way to "see" a bit of the history of this beautiful country and gave me a feeling of kinship because of my own country`s historical roots. My guide, Molly, was knowledgeable and helpful and gave me a delightful tour. I could see her love and pride for this historic treasure. I would say Elizabeth House is a "must see" for anyone who wants to get the true flavor of historical Sydney. |

I have recently visited this great place with my seven year old daughter and we both had a fantastic time. It is well worth the effort of catching public transport. Bring yourself and a picnic lunch to enjoy in the garden out front of the house. |
