Norman Lindsay Erotic art of Norman Lindsay (1879-1969) Norman Lindsay himself tells us about his method of painting in watercolors in one of the essays. He first traced the composition on paper. Then he wrote a chart of colors to use. He then applied a coat of yellow wash, with accents of pink, purple and blue in the required areas. The main color was then applied, while the paper was wet, in a classical watercolor technique. Sometimes though Norman Lindsay took a step away from the classics, and experimented more freely with the medium, applying the color thickly as if using oils, or scratching the paper through the paint with the end of the brush to achieve a required effect (fabrics, etc.). His favorite subject were human figures, especially nudes – women, men, gods and other creatures, heroes of ancient (Greek and Roman) folklore and products of his own creative imagination. Many of his paintings seem to be inspired by theatre. His lover, wife, assistant and mother of his children, Rose, was also the model for many of the nude female figures in his works. Eroticism, nudity, mystery, fantasy and art itself were Norman Lindsay’s favorite themes. Although contributing greatly to his success now, this fact made Norman Lindsay a very controversial figure in Australian art scene up until recently. These days his paintings are among most sought after works and are in private collections and museums of Australia.
