Figurative and abstract This art poster gallery, showing contemporary figurative and abstract art in Australia, is currently represented by one of the Australia’s most known artists, Brett Whiteley (1939-1992). Although many artists, such as Russel Drysdale, William Dobell, Charles Blackman, Frank Hinder and others worked in this area before him, Brett Whiteley was one of Australia’s most successful commercial artists. He received recognition in London during 1960s, and became very successful in 1970s, when he won many art prizes in Sydney. Living and working in his studio in Sydney’s Surry Hills, Whiteley created many superb paintings, using oil, and later collage of various mediums, achieving excellent command of color and line work. Often set in the interior of his studio, using background of Sydney Harbour, many of Whiteley’s paintings are both humorous and provocative, often bearing an erotic tension and combining highly developed abstract elements with deep landscape and seascape views.
Brett Whiteley’s works are in many museums and private collections in Australia and overseas. Brett Whiteley’s art posters are published in Sydney by Art Gallery of NSW.
